The Train

The train the Pleasantrip travelers ride out of Berlin and into the country, symbolizes possibility. Riding the train grants Vasili Ivanovich some relief, and puts him in contact with mysterious scenes from nature. However, the train also removes the group and Vasili Ivanovich from their larger social contexts, allowing the group members to harass and abuse their victim without reprimand from another, higher power. The group members use the train ride to violate Vasili Ivanovich in impossible ways.

The Group

The group of travelers is representative of the larger societal whole. As its individual members gradually mutate into one monstrous entity, their behaviors become increasingly threatening and violent. Because they perceive Vasili Ivanovich as an outsider, they bully him and attack his identity. The group is also a symbol of the refugee's host country.
