Summary

In Chapter 13, “A Bad Omen” (127), Scoob and G'ma stop in Jackson, Mississippi at the former home of civil rights activist Medgar Evers. G'ma explains that Evers was shot and killed outside of his house by a white supremacist and that it took 30 years for the murderer to be convicted. She recalls driving through Mississippi with Jimmy in 1968 and being pulled over by police. She was worried they would hurt Jimmy, but they were ultimately let go. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy and G'ma decided to abandon their road trip and return home. G'ma is crying and Scoob worries that visiting Evers' house was a bad omen.

In Chapter 14, “So Far from Home” (139), Scoob asks G'ma why she and Jimmy returned home. She tells him she realized she was pregnant. She also says excitedly, “This is the furthest I've ever gotten” (141). That night, Scoob plans to...
