Point of View

This novel is told by a third-person omniscient narrator. Consider the opening line of the novel: “Mandy Lawson stared out the kitchen window while she waited for the water to heat for her tea” (1). Other chapters start with similar sentences. Consider Chapter 5, for instance: “Jill glanced out the big bay window at Mimi’s Place and marveled at the size of the crowds streaming by” (61). The narrator details the actions, thoughts, and emotions of each character, but remains unbiased, even about Mandy’s ex-husband, Cory, who has gotten his girlfriend pregnant even though he has been married less than a year.
