Summary

Chapter 1

Pages 191 through 201 — This chapter consists of a flashback from Mala’s perspective, long before Ambrose married Elsie. One day, Mala discovers from the gossipy grocer Mr. Pilai that Ambrose is returning to Paradise from his time away on his theology scholarship. Mala becomes consumed with thoughts of her old friend, wondering if Ambrose ever came across Asha during his time abroad, as a teenaged Asha fled Paradise years ago. Mala goes home to bake bread and a cake for Ambrose, expecting a visit from him the next day. When her father returns home, drunk as usual, the hope Mala feels at the prospect of seeing Ambrose helps her to block out the nightly horror of being raped.
