Summary

Section 3 opens with Chapter 6, in which Sara and Lejla continue their road trip in the dead of night. They stop in the city of Jajce to stay at Mrs. Knezevic's house, a friend of Lejla's, who lets them stay the night before continuing north in the morning. Lejla tells Mrs. Knezevic that Sara can no longer speak the language - even though she can - and has fun watching Mrs. Knezevic talk to Sara as if she is a foreigner from Dublin who only speaks English. She is a sweet albeit patronizing host, slowing her speech as if Sara is not foreign but simply slow: "She was certain that even Irish people could grasp the sublime Slavic semantics as long as you talked to them slowly and patiently" (107).
