Summary

Following LeeRoy’s car accident, Linh’s neighbor, Mr. Morgan, agrees to hire Hằng and LeeRoy to fill in for his ranch hands over the summer. Hằng spends lots of time spying on Linh, who is going by “David” and living with a woman named Cora, but is forbidden from speaking to him. LeeRoy struggles to acclimate to the intense labor that is expected of him on the ranch, but stays in order to make enough money to repair his truck.

While Hằng and Leeroy acclimate themselves, Hằng’s brother—David, as he calls himself—wonders why Hằng is convinced she is his sister. He visits Mr. Morgan’s stable to take his horse, Linh, on a ride. The horse gets bit by a rattlesnake while nosing in the grass and David rushes her back...
