Summary

In Part 3, Chapter 1, Andrews, Miller, and Charley arrive in Butcher’s Crossing, and to their surprise, the town looks rather deserted. They look for McDonald at his office, but he is not there. They go to the hotel, and the man managing it is simply a drifter passing through who was told to mind the hotel in return for a little payment. They each pay for a room in the hotel, and in his room, Andrews takes his first bath in about eight months. Looking at himself in the mirror, Andrews barely recognizes his face, which is deeply tanned and bears a long beard. Andrews and Miller then spend more time looking for McDonald, and they eventually locate him. McDonald is surprised to see them, having presumed they were dead.
