Summary

Irina begins the chapter by making a list of what she likes about her friend and new babysitter, Sam. The events of the chapter are filtered through Irina’s perspective. Sam has been babysitting her for three hours and they have talked and played card games. Irina has learned that Sam’s father was not around while she was growing up, her brother was off committing crimes, and she spent a lot of time with her mentally ill mother playing cards.

Despite learning more about her friend, Irina is not convinced that Sam is not actually Samantha Geary. She watched Sam’s face on the drive up to the house earlier, but Sam disappointingly has no reaction. When Sam returns from the tour of the house that Karl takes her on when they first arrive, Irina is again disappointed to see that Sam appears...
