Bright Lights, Big City was adapted for the screen in 1988 by Mclnerney and director James Bridges. Critical reception of the film was mixed. Although some critics found Michael J. Fox's depiction of the book's unnamed narrator (in the film called Jamie) moving and well-acted, other critics decried the loss of the novel's quirky second person narration.
