Summary

Once again, Chapter 4 is divided along two timelines: the early days in the relationship of Michael and Penny Dunbar, and the more recent past in which Clay works on the bridge with Michael. In the past, Michael helps the removal men to push Penny's piano down Pepper Street to her house; Penny joins them, and they silently work together. After this event, Penny and Michael meet by coincidence at various points around the city, but hardly speak to one another. Intrigued by Michael, Penny plans her daily walks around the block so that she can pass his front door; eventually, after months of this, she gets up the courage to knock.

Penny and Michael get to know one another, and she tells Michael the story of her emigration from Poland. They fall in love, and Penny moves in with Michael; they return the piano...
