“Breath and Distance” uses an omniscient narrator to explore the experience of the central character, an unhoused man who lives a meagre life jumping trains across the country. He exists in a state of in between, never remaining in one place very long. The man pretends that the hardship of his life is worth the freedom it brings, although there are signs he yearns for the old life he left behind.
