Summary

Chapter 1

Chapter 1 opens with the narrator leaving a cellar she has been hiding in for four days. She is in an abandoned farmhouse that used to belong to her grandmother and she muses about the world being dead. After filling a backpack with jars of preserved food, she quietly leaves, being careful to ensure no one is around. After running through a wheat field and forest, she sees Leo, a timber wolf, who is waiting for her and greets her warmly. After again checking to be sure they are not being followed, they begin the walk home, which will take all day.
