Point of View

Book Lovers is told in the first-person point-of-view through the eyes of the protagonist, Nora Stephens. This means that the reader gets a very intimate look into her thoughts and emotions all throughout the novel in ways that alternate points of view could never achieve. For example, Nora’s anxiety is often mentioned in frantic thoughts and italicized sentences. She frequently recalls happy memories of her childhood in New York while also rationalizing everything she has given up for Libby. The reader relates to Nora on a personal level. Her thoughts are genuine and her witty responses and dry humor make sense alongside her narration. This also means that the reader will come to understand others based on what Nora is experiencing.
