Chapters 1 and 2 Summary

Janey Larkin is ten years old. She is sitting on the steps of a shack and the family is just trying to settle into this house, which is a temporary stopping place. There is a Mexican family living nearby and Janey knows that the father of the family is Manuel Romero. She knows that there's at least one child in the family and that she might make friends, but she also knows that the Larkin family has to move constantly in order for her father to find work.
