Summary

President Wingfield is deposed as president and arrested. He is jailed on board the Discovery and his food hoard is shared with everyone. His defense is that he was saving it in case the settlement ran out of food. Capt. Ratcliffe becomes president.

People begin to recover from the mysterious illness. it has rained and the river no longer is salty.

Capt. Smith has taken full responsibility for having found Wingfield's illegal stash of food, so Henry is not aware of Samuel's role in Wingfield's arrest. Samuel and Richard become friends. With all the deaths, Samuel finds some extra adult armor that is altered to fit Richard. Capt. Smith trains all the remaining settlers in musketry. Samuel wonders why the Natives haven't attacked them, since now there are only fifty settlers. He thinks it's possible they are simply waiting for them to starve...
