Coffee is at the heart of this poem and represents both the discomfort of the past and the comfort of present routine. It’s described as “bitter” and “acrid” (3.1, 2), and yet the speaker turns to it as a reliable companion in times of loneliness and despair. In some ways it also symbolizes what the speaker has lost; they are turning to the last remnant of a life that’s all but gone.
