Friendship

In the first section of the novel, Sam states, "A good friend keeps your secrets for you. A best friend helps you keep your own secrets" (p. 76). This is an interesting way to look at friendship because, in a way, it claims that friendship is based on deception. The reader sees this in much of the way Sam and her friends interact both with each other and with the outside world. Everything they do is centered on their own vanity and popularity, so much so that the girls hide the darkest parts of themselves: their insecurities and vulnerabilities from each other. When Sam discovers that she is living the same day over and over again, she finds that she cannot tell her friends what she's experiencing because she's too afraid they will mock her.
