Summary

In Chapter 4, David recounts his childhood. He was born in Massachusetts, but his family moved to Arizona when he was young. He was a high school freshman in the late 1960s. He started smoking cannabis as a way of gaining popularity. He also found the drug pleasant, but he eventually stopped using it. David began warning Nic about the dangers of drugs when Nic was still young. David mentioned his own drug use, and he still wonders if that was a mistake. After David found the bag of cannabis in Nic’s room, David and Karen scolded Nic and grounded him. David asked if Nic had used other drugs or alcohol, and Nic admitted that he had drunk alcohol with his friends once.
