Summary

Sofia convinced her mother to let her stay home from school because of "cramps" (263), and Marta worried about what she would do. Noah informed Marta that Joey is in trouble, and at first Marta thought Noah somehow found out about the pregnancy, but he was actually referring to Joey's visit to Massimo, and his entanglement with an Italian gang who "control the ports" (267). Noah's "sweat smelled rotten-sour" (267) with anxiety, as he feared that they would kill Joey because of his involvement with Noah and Yorgos' opposing union organizing.
