The Lady of Shalott, Alfred Lord Tennyson.

The Lady of Shalott is a poem written by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It is a poem about the ill-fated love of Elaine of Astolat, who loved Sir Lancelot of King Arthur's court. The poem is a famous one and is the background for Ellie's character and certain plot points in Avalon High.

Elaine's Pool.

Ellie spends most of her summer in Annapolis floating in the pool of their rental house. The pool offers Ellie a place to escape and gives her peace. At the end of the book it is revealed that Ellie is not Elaine of Astolat, as suspected, but is the Lady of the Lake. This revelation gives Ellie's pool and love of water even more importance as the Lady of the Lake is connected with water in Arthurian legend.
