(untitled chapter) The novel returns to the present. Elisabeth returns home to meet Zoe. Zoe is pretty, kind, in her 60s, and now a well-known psychoanalyst. Zoe is interested to learn about Daniel, and about how Daniel and Elisabeth would watch old films on a projector in the backyard on summer nights. Zoe is interested to know that Elisabeth goes to see Daniel each week. Elisabeth says she loves Daniel; Wendy rolls her eyes. Elisabeth denies that Daniel is comatose, but says he is only resting. Elisabeth falls asleep, and when she wakes up, she can hear her mother and Zoe talking in another room about antiques, about the past, and she can smell them smoking marijuana. When Elisabeth goes out into the living room, she catches her mother sitting on Zoe. Elisabeth does not care about this, but says she will start...
