Chapter 2 Summary

Consuelo tells Felipe that Aura will show him to his room. On his way, he thinks pleasantly about how easy the job will be and how much money he will make, but his attention soon shifts to Aura—whom he can only hear in the house's dark interior. He finally reaches his room and begins to get settled. Instead of a ceiling, he has a glass skylight. Everything in the room is very old-fashioned; much of it seems not to have been changed for decades. He briefly admires himself in the mirror and finds himself quietly repeating Aura's name. He smokes a few cigarettes and lays in bed for awhile, then gets up and leaves his room. As he gropes his way down the dark hallway, he accidentally flicks on a light switch.
