Summary
In Part 2, Chapter 7, the narrator, Tomas, and Xavier go out for dinner after another performance of Rivers. The play has done extraordinarily well and the narrator has fallen in love with the writing and her part. She loves the work so much she does not know what she will do with herself once its run is over. She reflects on her frustration with Max and the middle scene, and can no longer understand “what [she] had been feeling” (98). This has become her favorite scene and she thinks Max is brilliant.
While waiting for their food, the narrator reflects on Xavier’s work with Anne. Xavier is a dutiful assistant. The narrator and Tomas have been fascinated to observe how this relationship has changed Xavier. They are proud of him for working in theater but sometimes worry about Anne’s attachment to him...
