Rajiv Mohabir

Rajiv Mohabir is the author of the text. Because Antiman is his memoir, he writes the text from his first person point of view. Rajiv grew up with his family in Toronto, Canada and Chuluota, Florida. Throughout his adult life, however, Rajiv feels detached and alienated from these settings. He particularly feels alone in the context of his family life, because few people in his family accept him for who he is. Not long after immigrating to the United States, his parents, aunts, uncles, and their children all converted to Christianity. They cast off their Guyanese language, culture, traditions, and beliefs in order to assimilate to American life. With few exceptions, therefore, none of Rajiv’s family approves of his sexuality. They also disapprove of Rajiv’s desire to hear his grandmother Aji’s stories and songs from Guyana and India.
