Summary

The country slides into chaos. Randall Flagg wakes up in his hotel room and manages to fight off a man in a clown costume and escape. Samson and the Prophet are taken into the custody of several right-wing agitators who have swarmed the airfield.

Girlie gets a call from Rose explaining that she is in trouble and needs to be rescued from the Witch. Avon is reluctant to go, but ultimately agrees, on the condition that Girlie pay for the flights. When they arrive in California, most of the state is on fire, but Girlie drives through the flames anyway. When Avon and Girlie arrive at Rose’s address, they are greeted with the sight of Story knocking Rose out with a chair.
