Summary

In Chapter 7, the narrator introduces Richard Whiteheart Beads, Klaus’ boss who owns the house they all live in. Chapter 7 is divided into sections, each of which corresponds to a day of the week. It begins on a Saturday when Sweetheart Calico manages to escape the house. She is trying to get back to her daughters, but “no matter how fast or how far she walks, she can’t get out of the city” (88). As Klaus searches for her on Sunday, Richard tells him to just let her go, but Klaus explains that he can’t, saying “’She has enslaved me with her antelope ways’” (91).

On Monday Klaus and Richard go to work pulling out old carpets from a mall and dumping it in a barn bordering reservation land instead of paying to dispose of it in an EPA-designation hazardous waste site. Klaus...
