The short story's opening scenes are set at the narrator's home. She resides here with her mother, father, and younger sister Abi. At the story's start, Abi drinks a cup of bleach. Afterwards, the narrator stands there watching her mother's panicked response to the incident. The characters are in the kitchen, as the narrator is observing her mother pour Abi glasses of milk that she then dumps into the sink.

Because the narrator's father works close to the house, it does not take him long to get there after he hears what Abi has done. He and Mom perceive the situation as dire. Therefore, Dad does not come into the house when he arrives. Rather, Mom, Abi, and the narrator rush outside when Dad honks. The narrator realizes that she is responsible for closing the doors to the house when her parents continue yelling, honking, and crying.
