Part Three, Chapters Eight through Ten Summary

Felix's unit marches toward the front, and they hear an explosion. Many assume it is artillery, but Lieutenant Loveday has stepped on a mine and been blown apart. Felix is unmoved by the sight except for wondering what in French Loveday might have said.

Wheech-Browning arrives and says he has received a telephone call from Walter pertaining to Gabriel. Felix departs with Wheech-Browning. On the way, Wheech-Browning explains that when the British captured Nanda many of the British prisoners of war said that Gabriel had escaped two days prior.
