Summary

In Chapter 7, “A Refuge,” Karl accompanies the drunken Robinson back to the house where Robinson and Delamarche now reside. Despite the fact that Robinson and Delamarche have committed many misdeeds against Karl, Delamarche reacts to the sight of Karl with disdain. Delamarche claims that he and Robinson have done many kind things for Karl, and that Karl treated them ungratefully. Delamarche begrudgingly allows Karl to enter. It soon becomes apparent to Karl that the house is owned by a woman named Brunelda, and that she is merely allowing Delamarche and Robinson to stay there as servants. Delamarche serves Brunelda, and Robinson serves Delamarche. Upon seeing Karl, Brunelda demands that he remain in the house as a servant as well.
