Mary Boyne

Mary Boyne is the central character of "Afterward." She is married to Ned Boyne, and happy to be living at Lyng. She finds the house charming but mysterious and full of potential. Mary is inquisitive, often asking her husband about his thoughts on the house and the details of the lawsuit Elwell has brought against him. However, she is also far removed from her husband's work and does not realize her lack of familiarity with the Blue Star Mine scheme until late into the story. Mary is reflective, often thinking about the comments her cousin Alida Stair made about the ghost at Lyng, and wondering to what extent they are operating in her own life. When Ned goes missing, Mary's natural curiosity dissipates and transforms into apathy over her situation; she accepts that her husband has disappeared and that she will never know where he had gone...
