Aftershocks is divided into 12 overarching, titled sections. Each title is inspired either by an earthquake reference, or the blue chair. Each of these sections contains smaller titled sections, indicating the theme, location, or central interests of the pages enclosed. Despite these neat structural divisions, the memoir is does not follow a linear unfolding. Rather, the author moves frequently between scenes and accounts of her distant and recent past. In this way, the narrative form enacts Nadia's perpetual sense of dislocation from childhood through adulthood, as well as her search for home and identity. The memoir, therefore, is a collection of fragmented memories, which together reconstruct Nadia's narrative.
