Summary

In II, Eddy’s parents met Angélique “at the village fête” in 2006 (45). Talking to her was out of the norm, because she was part of “another caste” (45). Noticing she was alone and crying, Eddy’s father approached her, inviting her back to the house. Monique could never understand how her husband could be “sweet and even generous to others,” but cruel to his family (46).

At the house, Angélique told Eddy’s parents “the man she loved had just left her” (47). Single and childless, she despaired. Eddy listened to his parents comfort her. The way they acted revealed their fear of their “social inferiority” (47).
