Summary

Chapter 3 begins with Erica on Hydra, narrating in the present tense. She meets Charmian’s husband, George Johnston, at a café. As she and George talk, it becomes clear that he is cynical about life on the island and specifically skeptical about the influx of young people who come there with artistic aspirations. Erica also briefly meets Jean-Claude Maurice and Patrick Greer, who develop only as minor characters. Towards the end of the chapter, she says she wants to become a writer.

Erica finds her way to Charmian’s home where she is hectically managing the kitchen. They meet with hugs and kisses, and Charmian speaks to Erica as if she has known her for her whole life.
