Summary

Part 3, Chapter 1 – The narrator is now 18 and preparing for final exams. She looks forward to getting her own place and leaving her mother and brother behind.

Part 3, Chapter 2 – The narrator is now living in the city, is attending college, and is homesick. The city is full of strangers and it is a startling experience to the narrator. She listens to all of the other students talk about what they did over the summer, such as going to the United States or London. She meets a girl in class who invites her out for a drink, and explains she and her family lived in Sweden for a while. The narrator’s mother calls that night, reminding her to say her prayers and tells her that drinking is the devil’s work.
