Chapters 5 through 8 Summary

In chapter five, Hattie is waiting to meet Adam for the first time. Papa had left on Thursday, headed for Cincinnati to pick up Adam, and is returning today. Hattie, Dad and Mom are now headed to Nana and Papa's for dinner. They arrive at the door and Adam rushes out, talking very quickly. When Dad asks if Adam remembers Hattie, Adam hugs her and says, "My old friend, my old old friend, Hattie Owen, how are you, how are you?" Hattie says that he talks so fast that she becomes breathless just from listening. But Adam is smiling so widely that Hattie finds herself smiling as well, and she notes that Mom and Dad are also smiling. Adam says that Hattie was not yet two years old when he last saw her.
