Summary

Lemuel stays at the hospital for weeks, loses his right eye entirely, his false teeth and his money. Upon his release, he runs into Mr. “Shagpoke” Whipple, who invites him to coffee only to admit he cannot pay. They go to the Salvation Army for free donuts and coffee. He tells Lemuel his plan to run for President again upon his release from prison was postponed when he discovered the Democratic Party had become too socialist for his taste. He started the National Revolutionary Party or “Leather Shirts” to return America to its traditional values (47). The party members wear coonskin hats, deerskin shirts, moccasins and fight with squirrel rifles. Shagpoke appoints Lemuel a commander and makes a recruitment speech to the crowd of unemployed.
