Chapters 13-16 Summary

Chapter 13 - The next morning in the Prayer Corner, Dan focuses on purifying Jennifer. Helen speaks out and says that she is not his child, shocking the parents. She wants to explain, but realizes that she is frightening Cathy so she stops. As she walks to class, she sees a penny on the ground and bends down to pick it up. Everything goes gray for a moment, and she hears an echoey sound as if she is underwater.

Later, she meets up with James and makes plans for the day. They are walking to his house when a dog runs into the road, and he cries out, "Diggs!" When Helen asks James if it was his dog, he tells her that he doesn't have a dog. He doesn't know why he called out the name.
