Jake Barnes

Jake Barnes is the first person narrator of the novel. He is Charlie Barnes's and Charley Proffit's foster child. When Jake is a little boy, Charlie and Charley save his life, and later take him into their home. When Charlie and Charley get divorced, Jake is devastated. Despite his mother's and sister's hatred for Charlie, Jake loves him. He waits at the window every Saturday for Charlie to come and visit. Charlie keeps his promise, convincing Jake that he is a reliable and dependable father.

Charlie eventually disappears from Jake's life. Jake moves out of his mother's house to get away from her boyfriend, Dickie. He starts living on the streets.
