Summary

This section includes the final two chapters of the Part “The Embrace” including: “‘Hammer of Jesus’: March 2008 - February 2009” and “‘Jesus is Lord.’” “‘Hammer of Jesus’” begins from the third person perspective of Dawn who has started going to the Dayton gym. She talks to the boxing coach Ernie Beecher. He is surprised since usually boxers are black or Latino, but thinks Dawn might be different. He asks her why she wants to box and she says she thinks she would be good at it. She tells him about the other women boxers she knows “Hernandez, Gogarty, Crowe, Johnette Taylor” (556). Ernie considers her and tells her to come back tomorrow. Dawn smiles and tells him her name is D.D.

Dawn decides she will become the Hammer of Jesus. She wants to make the Dunphy name proud...
