Charles L. Geshekter

In the following viewpoint, Charles L. Geshekter contends that Western media and scientists misrepresent the extent and causes of AIDS in Africa. He asserts that African AIDS is caused by socioeconomic problems, not sexual practices. According to Geshekter, the media stereotypes African sexual habits even though African sexual behavior is comparable to the West’s. In addition, he argues HIV tests are unreliable and produce a high percentage of false-positive results. Geshekter maintains that socioeconomic problems such as malnutrition and poor sanitation are the likely source of clinical African AIDS symptoms. Geshekter is Professor of African History at California State University at Chico.
