Learning about the latest nuclear incidents and accidents is now a matter of a few keystrokes. The online Nuclear Events Web-based System (NEWS) provides up-to-date information on the safety significance of events reported at nuclear installations worldwide. It covers accidents at nuclear power plants, research reactors, irradiation plants, and medical centers, as well as incidents that occur during the transport of radioactive material. For each event the system provides date, facility type, country, and a significance rating based on the ac- cepted gauge of one for an anomaly to seven for a catastrophic accident. Clicking on the event title yields a short description of the accident. The online reporting system was restricted to authorized users from regulatory authorities and nuclear facilities until it was opened to the media and public in early 2003. It can be accessed at the IAEA's website (www-news.iaea.org).
