Psychic mediums have been claiming to speak to the dead since 1834 when the Fox sisters claimed to communicate with the dead through rapping on walls. The means of communicating with the dead have become more sophisticated, however until recently there was not a sophisticated method of testing the claims scientifically. Gary E. Schwartz was the first to test a psychic medium's validity through scientific methods.

Dr. Schwartz was initially contacted by HBO to conduct such a study to be used for an after-death communications documentary. With proper funding, Schwartz and his colleagues were able to conduct a scientific study in a controlled laboratory.
