In vitro fertilization is a fertility treatment in which a couple’s egg and sperm are fertilized outside the womb and implanted into the woman as an embryo. Because fertility treatments produce more embryos than can be safely implanted into a womb, unused embryos are frozen so that they may be stored and used in the future.
