In the following viewpoint Thomas Sowell, a nationally syndicated columnist, criticizes prominent gun control advocates for ignoring evidence that gun ownership can deter crime and that guns are useful for self-defense. In particular, he denounces celebrities who campaign against guns but also hire armed bodyguards. Sowell argues that law-abiding citizens should own guns because criminals are less likely to attack an armed citizen. He also notes that most of the high- profile shootings exploited by the media have occurred in places where victims are likely to be unarmed, such as schools and churches.
