According to Terry Golway, a columnist for America magazine, celebrity and entertainment have become the aims of the U.S. news media. In the following selection Golway examines the media's treatment of several high—profile criminal cases, such as that of O.J. Simpson, who was tried and acquitted for the murder of his former wife Nicole Simpson and her companion Ron Goldman, and of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted for the murder of their parents, arguing that journalists exploit the popular appeal of these cases for entertainment, and in doing so denigrate both justice and the media.
