Although tattooing has been illegal in the state since 1962, talented artists like Tex operate thriving underground body art businesses that rely solely on word of mouth referrals. With tattoo prohibition laws rarely enforced in Massachusetts, the colorful tattooist often holds parties at which he tattoos many clients in succession.
