American biologist and zoologist whose work spanned an interest in freshwater crustacean populations to analyses of how animals cooperate, rather than compete, for the betterment of their communities. Allee felt that animal cooperation was a natural function and pointed out the implications for human societies. He was professor of zoology at the University of Chicago and ended his career as a biologist at the University of Florida.
