Swedish neuroscientist who received the 1981 Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology, which he shared with Roger Sperry and David Hubel, for research on the organization and local functions of the brain. Their work, which remains of vital importance, provided a better understanding of which areas of the brain are called upon when performing certain mental and physical tasks. This knowledge has led toward advances in the treatment of various problems arising from brain trauma and disease.
