1639?-1710

French soldier and discoverer who led explorations of the expansive Lake Superior. Born into French nobility, Dulhut set sail for New France (Canada) in 1674 and settled in Montreal the following year. In 1678, he formed an expedition to try to form alliances between the French and the Native American populations living along the Lake Superior shoreline. This and ensuing travels and negotiations helped to ensure France's role as the primary European force in the fur trade within New France. Dulhut died in Montreal in 1710.
