While many artists are not comfortable with the more complicated work carried out by mathematicians and vice versa, mathematics has been an important part of the art of music for centuries, from the simple counting of the beats in a musical composition to the complex computer used to produce realistic, computer synthesized music. Musical time signatures are written and spoken of like with the "numerator" telling musicians how many beats to count per measure and the "denominator" showing the type of note (half note, quarter note, etc.), or the length in relation to a whole note, that is assigned to each beat. For example, any time signature in the form 1/x means there is one beat in each measure, 5/x means there are five beats in each measure, etc. A time signature of x/1 means each beat is worth one whole note, or x...
